Being Pregnant in Japan: What Should You Do?
Hello, Mommies! Welcome to Phoo Sar in Japan.
Are you living in Japan and suspect you might be pregnant?
Are you feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety? In today’s video, I’m going to explain the step-by-step process of what you need to do first.
Step 1: Confirm with a Home Test
First, go to a local drugstore and buy a pregnancy test kit, called a Ninshin Kensa-yaku (妊娠検査薬).
If you see two red lines, it’s time for the next step: visiting a clinic.
Note on Costs: Please be prepared! In Japan, pregnancy check-ups are generally not covered by standard health insurance.
For your first visit, expect to pay between 5,000 to 10,000 yen.
Step 2: Find an OB-GYN
Next, you need to find an OB-GYN clinic, known as Sanfujinka (産婦人科).
It is best to choose a clinic close to your home for convenience.
When you call to make an appointment, you can say: “Ninshin kensa wo shitai desu” (I would like a pregnancy check-up).
Pro-Tip: Popular hospitals in Japan book up very quickly!
It is crucial to reserve your “birth slot” (Bunben Yoyaku) as early as possible.
Step 3: Visit the City Office
Once the doctor confirms the baby’s heartbeat, they will provide you with a certificate.
Take this document to your local City Hall or Ward Office to apply for the Boshi Techou (Maternal and Child Health Handbook).
This handbook is essential because:
It comes with coupons/vouchers to significantly reduce your clinic visit costs.
It serves as a permanent health record for your child.
Don’t forget to ask if they have a version translated into Burmese!
You Are Not Alone
Don’t worry about giving birth in Japan.
Even if you are away from home, there are many support systems and people ready to help you.
If you have any more questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
Wishing both Mommy and Baby a healthy journey ahead!
Bye-bye!
